Throughout ancient times, meditation has played a significant role in a variety of spiritual and religious traditions. It has been employed as a tool for introspection, mental focus, and inner tranquility. The accomplishment of jhanas, a progression of ever more advanced states of consciousness, is one less well-known component of meditation.
Early Buddhist literature gives descriptions of a sequence of meditative experiences called jhanas. The first four jhanas form the foundation for more complex meditation techniques and are thought to be quite simple to achieve.
