Bengali Buddhist teacher and meditation master Dipa Ma, sometimes called Dipamai Ma, resided in Kolkata, India. 1911 saw her birth, and 1989 saw her death. Vipassana meditation is a kind of mindfulness meditation that has its roots in the Buddhist tradition. Dipa Ma was renowned for her straightforward, sincere, and easy-to-understand approach to the practice.

She studied under the late Mahasi Sayadaw, a well-known Burmese meditation master, and later established herself as a reputable teacher in her own right. Students from all over the globe were attracted to her warmth, compassion, and in-depth knowledge of the practice. Due to her understanding of the nature of mind and her personification of the virtues of wisdom and compassion, Dipa Ma was regarded by her disciples as a “living Buddha.”

Her teachings highlighted the need of cultivating compassion for oneself and others as well as awareness in daily actions. A concentration on the present moment and a lack of judgment toward one’s thoughts and emotions were characteristics of Dipa Ma’s method of meditation.
